A lot of schools require you to study a language for at least a few years, but learning a new language can be really hard! That’s why a lot of students really struggle to maintain good grades in Spanish, French, or whatever language they’re studying. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to make studying a foreign language a little easier.
Learn vocabulary with Anki
To study a language, you actually need to know a language. That’s why learning vocabulary is a priority! Find pre-made vocabulary flashcards on quizlet, and export them to anki, where you can practice them daily using spaced repetition. This is a great way to incorporate active recall in your studying.
Memorise verb conjugation
It can be hard to learn verb conjugations, but verbs are the building blocks of any language. Find the 20 most common verbs in your language, and learn how to conjugate them in the past, present, and future tenses! By learning how to conjugate the most common verbs, you’ll inadvertently be practicing conjugating most verbs, since the majority of verbs in a given language are regular.
Watch movies & TV shows
This is a great way to get immersed in the language, learn how native speakers speak, and learn more advanced vocabulary! Find a movie, tv show, or youtube video in your target language and watch it. Remember to turn the subtitles to the language as well so that you’re not just reading the subtitles to understand the video!
Translate texts
Translating texts from your language into English is a great way to learn new words. Find a challenging text (from a textbook or online!), translate the words you know, and then google the words you don’t know the meaning of!
Stay consistent
It’s important to study your language regularly. While it’s hard to learn a language from scratch on Duolingo, it can be helpful! This is a super fun and effective way to stay consistent with learning your language.
