Weirdest study tips that actually work

There are probably millions of study tips out there, so if you’re looking for study advice, you’ve probably heard the same thing multiple times: use active recall, make a study schedule, don’t read the textbook. While these are important tips, you’ve heard them a thousand times. So here are some actually unique study tips!

Use timers while studying

Whenever you have a study session, set a timer for however long you want to study for. Challenge yourself to race against the clock and finish your studying before the timer ends – this will motivate you to study faster! Nonetheless, if you’re not feeling very motivated, this can still help you get your task done. That’s because you can tell yourself that there’s only x minutes left, so just keep working until the timer runs out.

Relate it to your life

The most important person in your life is you. Therefore, the best way to remember any information is to make it seem relevant to your daily life. Try to relate ideas to your life or your hobbies by linking it to funny stories or acronyms. This might seem difficult at first, but everytime you learn a new concept, think: how does this impact upon my life?

Multitask for motivation

You’ve probably seen that video of a kid scrolling through Youtube shorts and simultaneously playing minecraft. You’ve probably also thought, “what has this generation come to?” However, chances are, your attention span has also been ruined by TikTok and other brainrot content. So, how can we use this to our advantage? If you’re super tired and unmotivated but you just want to get something done, then try multitasking. Turn on a youtube video or podcast and listen to it in the background while you study. It won’t be as effective as normal, but, hey, at least you’re studying!

Watch documentaries

Documentaries are a great way to remember new information. While they are technically a passive recall method, they’re very effective at helping you remember different topics. That’s because the visuals and narration give your brain more to latch on to and remember. They’re also helpful because you feel as though you’re experiencing the event yourself, at least on some level. This is because you’re not just reading about the information, you’re watching it happen. So, you’ll automatically remember more!

Healthy competition

Try to make studying a competition with yourself. Set yourself daily challenges for how long you can study for without losing concentration. Everyday, try to beat the record you set yesterday. Apps like Flora are also a great way to incorporate competition into your studying, since it utilises gamification and encourages you to study so that you collect all the plants in the app!
