As students, it’s very important that we stay motivated. After all, without some sort of motivation, it’s very likely that we won’t feel the need to study, do homework, or improve ourselves. Sadly, there are a lot of things out there that can ruin your motivation. Here’s a guide on how to avoid them!
Comparing yourself to others
No one is experiencing the same life as you, so stop comparing yourself to others. No one has faced the same setbacks or had the same successes as you, so why should they be on the same path as you? It’s super demotivating and can even cause you to resent other people. Instead, think about the successful attributes they have, and try to embody them. For example, if you compare yourself to someone who is a better athlete, consider trying to emulate their work ethic.
Distractions
Constant distractions can also cause you to lose sight of your goals and stop pushing. On a smaller scale, turn off your phone and go to a quiet room to study so you won’t get distracted while studying. On a larger scale, get rid of anything in your life that’s dragging you down, whether that’s responsibilities or people.
Not having goals
Without some sort of goal to strive towards, you’ll feel lost and directionless. Have some sort of long-term vision or dream in mind while studying or working. You can even create a vision board to remind yourself of this goal! This is a great way to motivate yourself even when life gets difficult!
Unrealistic expectations
It’s very important to set goals, but let’s make sure that they’re attainable. If they aren’t, there’s a chance that you won’t achieve them and you’ll feel demotivated. Basically, reach for the stars, but reach for a close star. Make sure your goals are smart: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
Fear of failure
If you’re scared that you’ll fail at something, then you probably won’t try it. This is the easiest way to lose motivation for absolutely any goal. Get over it by asking yourself: so what if I fail? What’s the worst thing that could happen? Try journalling to help you work out why you feel this way about this particular goal.
