We now spend an average of 3 hours and 15 minutes on our phones – that’s almost 20% of your day! Our phones have become an integral part of daily life, but that’s not always a good thing: a lot of people consider their phones distractions that hinder their productivity. If that sounds like you, then check out these tips to reduce your screen time!
Be more mindful
Try to consider why you use your phone and whether you actually enjoy it. When you’re about to use your phone, ask yourself why you’re picking it up. While scrolling through Instagram, consider whether you’re actually having fun! A good way to be more mindful of your phone usage is to stick a post-it note to your phone: write down a question like, “why are you reaching for your phone?” to become more conscious of your reasons for using your phone.
Write down your goals
Another good idea is to write down how long you’d like to spend on your phone. Writing goals is a great way to make yourself more aware of phone usage. Therefore, you’ll be less likely to waste time on your phone! Remember to consider your past screentime to make your goals realistic and achievable!
Set scrolling times
A lot of people set times during which they can’t use their phones. This isn’t always effective because you might end up ignoring your own rules and feeling resentful. Instead, decide on a time for scrolling as long as you want on your phone. This way, you still have the freedom of spending ages on your phone while decreasing the overall time!
Hide your phone
There’s an old saying: out of sight, out of mind. This applies here! Stop putting your phone within reach – instead, place it in a cupboard or a different room. This way, you’ll be less tempted to reach for it whenever you feel bored! If you really want to decrease your screen time, then ask someone else to hide your phone somewhere so you physically won’t be able to use it.
Delete distractions
If hiding your phone isn’t an option, then hiding distractions is the next best option! Check your screen time and figure out which apps you’re wasting the most time on. Then, delete these apps so you won’t be tempted to use your phone! Obviously if you use some apps for school, uni, or work, then don’t delete them 🙂
