How to be mindful while you study

Mindfulness (and especially meditation) has become super popular recently. It seems like every productivity expert thinks this will revolutionise your life. However, how can you – as a student – use mindfulness to make yourself more productive?

Benefits of mindfulness

Mindfulness can be super useful in making you a more productive – and happier! – student. According to researchers, by focusing on the present, you’ll be able to improve your focus, decrease your stress, and boost your memory. Not only will you be more efficient, but you’ll likely learn to actually enjoy the process of studying.

Creating a mindful environment

First of all, make sure you’re mindful of your environment. Be deliberate in what you keep on your desk to avoid clutter and distractions. Surround yourself with things that are soothing and bring you joy. I have a whole video on my channel about how to best optimise your study space according to science!

Using mindfulness while studying

While studying, focus on only one task at a time. This is the core tenet of mindfulness: being conscious of where you put your attention. You can also take a moment to center yourself before each study session to help yourself get into the focused mindset.

Taking mindful breaks

Mindfulness should extend into your study breaks, too. Make sure you’re aware of how you’re spending your time. There’s two main reasons for this: one, mindless social media consumption can make it more difficult for you to return to the task at hand. Two (and this is arguably the more important reason) do you actually enjoy mindless content consumption? Instead of scrolling through Instagram during your break, go for a walk or meditate.

Overcoming distractions using mindfulness

Mindfulness is also a great way to stay focused and avoid distractions. The next time you notice yourself getting distracted, simply redirect your focus back to your work without judgement. Meditation is a great way to practice this skill. By learning to focus on your breath, you’ll strengthen your focus muscles and become more productive!
